Fine Furs Since 1900

Pollacks have been providing fine fashion outerwear for over 120 years. Located in Reading, Pennsylvania, the company was founded in 1900 by Solomon Pollack and is proudly owned and operated by the 3rd and 4th generations of his family including his grandson Robert Pollack and wife Judy Pollack and their daughter Susan Pollack.

Known previously as Pollack Furs and then as Pollack Furs and Leathers, the new name, Pollack Fashion Outerwear, more accurately reflects the evolution of the company and the variety of merchandise now available. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What is the difference between female and male mink pelts?

Female mink pelts are generally smaller and lighter weight than male mink pelts. Female mink pelts also have a high luster and soft, silky texture while male mink pelts are more dense. We offer both coats made with female pelts and coats made of male pelts, so you can choose the one that best meets your needs.

  • How do I tell the quality of a fur?

The design, quality of the pelts, and the workmanship determine the quality and value of a coat. A well- designed coat will fit well and reflect your personal look. A coat should have well-matched, lightweight an supple pelts with an even sheen. The workmanship must create even seams and good matching. We use our century of experience to choose well-made furs designed to fit your lifestyle.

  • Is a sheared fur as warm as an unsheared fur?

Sheared fur is just as warm as unsheared fur. A fur’s warmth is determined by the underfur, which acts as insulation. Whether or not the longer guard hairs are sheared off, the underfur remains intact and provides the same warmth.

  • Does dyeing a fur affect its quality?

No. A dyed fur keeps its softness and luster. Dyeing fur gives you unique design options without  compromising the quality of the fur.

  • How do I insure my fur?

Bring it to a professional furrier for a written appraisal. Give this appraisal to your insurance company so that the fur can be listed on a separate rider of your homeowner's insurance policy. Ask your insurance agent for advice and details.

  • Is financing available?

We offer a number of financing options, including layaway. Contact us for details.

  • Will rain ruin a fur?

A mild rain will not ruin your fur. Just hang the garment up to dry in a well-ventilated room away from direct heat. After it is dry, give the fur a vigorous shake. If your fur gets thoroughly soaked, however, contact Pollack Furs and Leathers for proper treatment.

  • What is shearling?

Shearling is natural lamb skin with fleece on the inside and leather on the outside. Shearlings offer a cozy option for today’s casual lifestyle.

  • What can I do with a coat fur I have inherited?

Consider redesigning the coat using fabrics such as leather, microfiber, or knit to achieve a more modern style. You have the fur added as trim on a sweater or cloth coat. If you prefer not the wear the fur, you can have it repurposed  to create plush stuffed animals and pillows or throws. All are great options to allow grandchildren to keep their grandparents close to their hearts. Click here to see all that you can do with your fur.

  • How do I care for my fur?

Take your fur to a professional furrier each spring for storage. The furrier can condition, clean, and glaze it while it’s there to prolong the life a beauty of your coat. Fur should never be kept in a cedar chest or closet where the pelts will dry out and the fur will lose its luster.

  • How often should my fur be conditioned?

Your fur needs to be conditioned, cleaned, and glazed at least once every two years to prevent it from drying out and losing its suppleness.

  • Can I store my fur at home since I have air conditioning?

No. Closets are generally 10 degrees warmer than your home, which is too warm for your fur. In a closet, the pelts will dry out and the fur will lose its luster.
